Hill and Moorland Navigation

The Hill and Moorland Navigation course is designed to give you confidence to use a map and compass to navigate over open moorland. It would be suitable for walkers who are confident using a map and compass but want to build on their navigation skills and also as a refresher for anyone about to be assessed for awards involving navigation (e.g. Walking Group Leader, Summer Mountain Leader, NNAS).
The course will be mainly outdoors with a mixture of easy and more challenging terrains. It will include;
- Revision of use of compass and route planning
• Appropriate kit choice
• Measuring distance using pacing and timings
• Macro and Micronavigation techniques
• Relocation techniques
• Route deviations to avoid difficult terrain
• Techniques for poor visibility
• Safety on the hills
• Access rights and responsibilities
